CONVENTUAL ROMANTIC IN THE HEART OF THE WACHAU: THE RICHARD THE
LIONHEARTED IN DÜRNSTEIN.
Richard the Lionhearted is the reputed first famous guest of Dürnstein.
What the legendary English king did not enjoy quite voluntarily almoust
exactly 8 centuries ago, awaits you almost entirely unchanged: one of the most
beautiful untouched river basins of Europe, nesting among the wooded hills of
the Waldviertel and the Dunkelsteiner Wald. Here in the Wachau, where the mild
sunny climate is benficial not only for the wine, the Thiery family offers
preferential treatment to their guests. The family runs this establishment
since 1884, now in the third generation, a place in the excellent ambience of
a former convent of Clarissinnas right on the Danube.
Medieval conventual walls, local art objects and its wonderful location give
the premises their unique character. Most agreeable calm and relaxation can be
found wherever you go: be it the refectory with its open fireplace, the
romantic terraced restaurant overlooking the Danube or the spacious sleepy
conventual garden with its swimming-pool. Moreover the exquisite cuisine, rich
in vension and fish specialities, as well as the noble wine ripened in the
former vineyard of the Convent make your visit also a culinary experience.

THE CONVENT GARDEN
The convent of the clarissinas was founded 1289 by Leuthold I. of Kuenring.
The convent church was finished 1330. The existing church gives an impression
of the former importance of the convent, but it was dissolved by 1571 and
became part of the monastery of the Augustines. In 1715 the former church
became a storehouse for grain.
The first inn in the former buildings of the convent existed already in the
19th century. The Thiery family is in charge of the building since 1884,
always taking care to preserve the valueable old buildings, to equip the
wide rooms with beautiful things and to care for the kitchen as well as for
the wine-cellar. So it became a house which combines modern hospitality and
historic ambiance. A romantic annotation of Emil Strecker, a famous artist who
was a frequent guest like many other artists of this time, lead to the name
"Gasthof zum Richard Löwenherz". Since that time the house is
obliged to this royal name - as ROMANTIK HOTEL RICHARD LÖWENHERZ, where every
guest is a king.
